At this time, nobody really knows how far "a bow" can be accurately shot. This is because bows — and arrows — are continually being improved….. Since "accuracy" entails more than just being able to hit an "area" of a target ("accuracy" might as well be the entire deer is the "target" – and the arrow might hit the deer in the tail), we need to look at the documented records of various competitions.
In the past, I have used the published and documented results of FITA
competitions, and I will do so again. At a distance of 90-meters: Outdoor Compound – Men – Individual record for "accuracy" is 349 points (out of a possible 360), by Liam Grimwood of Great Britain on 2 August 2008. The record for Outdoor Recurve – Men – Individual is 337 (again, out of a possible 360) by Yong-Ho Jang of Korea on 16 July 2003.
90 meters is the same as 98.425 yards, and a score of 10 points is awarded for each arrow in the "inner gold". The results quoted are found at the FITA website, under "Results" and then "World Records" (list "All" in the drop-down menus for "Discipline", "Category" and "Type", then click "List World Records").
The so-called "Imperial Rounds" (such as the York Round) are shot at up to 100 yards, and they also involve more arrows — but the scoring is also a bit different, in that no matter where in the "gold" the arrow hits, it counts only as 9 points (even in the exact center). Both the FITA Metric and the Imperial York competitions use the same size target face at their longest distances, so the total "gold" area is the same size as well.
Bernard Cornwell writes fiction. Oh, his books may be based on Historical Fact — but they are still fiction. Please keep that in mind when quoting anything in such books as "fact" without some form of documented corraborating evidence.

Bow Wow nowadays sucks! In the beginning of his career he was at his best.
The school probably is not a wise choice, even though they may have a school archery program during school hours they don't want folks there after hours unsupervised. it's a liability insurance issue. Call your local archery store and ask about public ranges in your area. Ask around to find some open land where you can get permission of the land owner to set up a target. Find a buddy with a big garage and shoot indoors for close distance practice.
